residents, even wildlife fled the city today, after an

unnamed ice dancer with particularly nasty foot odour

removed her skates after the warm up at the Pacific Coliseum.

Gentlemen scientists celebrated President

Obama's recent decision to end the lunar

space program, effectively putting Moon

missions back in the hands of the

do-it-yourselfer.

The first of these moon voyages, SPAM 1,

will launch from the Antrim Truckstop

parking lot shortly after Bingo on Saturday.

Comprised of a wringer washer, a CCM Targa

and a pot-belly stove, the spacecraft is

powered by BBQ starter fluid and charcoal

briquettes.

Today's collage is dedicated to Fred Morrison (the man in the space helmet), inventor of the Frisbee, who died this week at the age of 90.

Following his address to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland,

Stephen Harper launched into an impromptu rendition of

the Sound of Music's "Lonely Goatherd", to mixed reviews.

After being detained by the Swiss Police for several

hours, the Canadian Prime Minister was escorted to

the airport, given a Swiss Army knife and a lump of chocolate

and asked to never return to the peaceful alpine country.

Does this sound a bit like a Scooby Doo episode? All that's lacking is the appearance of Farmer Harper dressed as a ghost to scare away them darn, nosy kids!

Product Placement, pages A8, A9

Curiously, the Globe's feature photo's by Peter Power in Haiti are paired with a huge colour Lexus ad: TOTAL FREEDOM MAY BE THE GREATEST LUXURY OF ALL. The images of crowded refugee camps with the title Struggles to get food, find shelter and survive, are juxtaposed with the 7 person luxury vehicle in a beautiful snowy mountain scene with not a person (not even a driver) in sight.

Today's Globe, (Jan 19) has another photo feature by Power on pages A8,A9: Where food and water are worth fighting for , and an article on congested airspace. There is a picture of a crowded market place where people are grabbing whatever they can and an armed soldier aiming a kick at a running boy. This enveloped by a full page American Express ad that says: Tired of standing in Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine?
Is it just me?

General Motors unveiled its first "green" vehicle

at the Detroit Auto Show this week. The Chevy

"Slider" is a gravity-powered vehicle which consumes

neither petroleum, nor electrical power and produces

zero emissions.

The Slider's speed and efficiency are

superior to any other car in its class and it

will be released for sale as soon as GM engineers

can figure out how to make it go uphill.

Juxtaposition

Both these pictures appeared on the back page of the Globe Focus & Books section of Saturday's paper. Such a striking contrast of images, both with a solitary figure in a panoramic setting: Jane Urquart reading in her lakeside studio and a young girl set against Haiti's notorious Cite Soleil (2006).

When macaroni and fish heads are on

the menu, one must take great care in

choosing the appropriate wine.

As the palate is likely in a state of

terrible confusion, an expensive bottle

would only cause further shock.

In such a case I strongly recommend

that the price of the wine not exceed

the total wholesale value of the meal.

I have never been much of a wine connoisseur, but I do recall the two fool proof rules for wine purchasing from my university days. 1. Largest bottle, 2. lowest price. The favorite for special occasions was a tall green bottle with RED WINE in bold black letters stenciled on a plain white label. This became known as Red Wine, red wine and was the perfect complement to any massive cauldron of spaghetti.

Tonight, Sports Minister Gary Lunn and his

polar bear take on Prime Minister Stephen Harper

and his kitten in a merciless ice dancing

competition outside the Chateau Lake Louise.

Wall Street executives appointed themselves to the

US Olympic stair-climbing squad yesterday, making

them the first and only Olympians in the newest

demonstration sport.

The four bankers appealed successfully to the IOC,

claiming it was unfair that millionaire hockey players

were eligible for medals, while banking officials

were shut out of the Olympics completely.

As there were no challengers for the stair-climbing

event, the foursome immediately claimed their medals

at the podium then proceeded to the bar.

Globe and Mail Project: #24 OLYMPIC FLAME TORCHES POPCORN FACTORY

Controversy continued to dog the Olympic Torch Relay

as a flash from two torches ignited an abandoned

popcorn factory outside North Battleford yesterday.

VANOC officials were quick to commend the community

for their organized cleanup, and the local Jumbo Video

for providing free videos to the volunteers.

Since kindergarten, we've been told that running with scissors is a dangerous thing. 12,000 people running across the land with fiery sticks? You be the judge. Two other collages from this series involving the olympic torch: GOOGLE TORCH CAM and NEW YEAR'S EVE TURF WAR BLACKENS EYE OF OLYMPIC TORCH RELAY. Incidentally, there is an Olympic torch cam on the CTV website so that you can follow the torch, accomapanied by a google map entitled "Where is the Torch Now". The webcam is actually mounted on the truck and not on the torch itself.
